Ambleside
Ambleside is
the gateway from the Southern Lakes to the Northern Lakes and is
favoured by the climbing and walking community. Excellent for the
hiking visitor with many walking routes to the surrounding fells
and lakes than any other village in the Lake District.
It can get very
busy in the summer, but unlike some other villages can still be
lively in the winter months when the winter walkers arrive.
The oldest area
of Ambleside dates back to the fifteenth-century and is situated
on the Kirkstone pass side of the Stock Beck Ghyll. You can still
see the restored water wheels just below the bridge on the main
road leading to Grasmere.
The local Tourist
Information Centre and other amenities are dotted around the village
with some well known visitor attractions like Hayes Garden Centre
located just outside the main village area.
Steamers arrive
from Bowness Bay and Lakeside at Waterhead, which is about two miles
south of Ambleside village or alternatively visitors can also catch
the open-top bus from Windermere to Ambleside.
