Hawkshead
Hawkshead is situated near the head of Esthwaite Water and considered
to be one of the prettiest villages in the Lake District.
Hawkshead, similar
to Grasmere, can get very busy in the summer months therefore vehicles
are not allowed through the village itself and a large public car
park has been provided for this purpose thus keeping the village
centre itself as an open-air museum.
One of the most
interesting Lakeland churches, St Michaels, overlooks the village.
There has always been a chapel or a church in this position since
the twelfth-century. The present church dates back to around the
fifteenth-century.
Tourist attractions
include the Old Grammar School, the Beatrix Potter Gallery and many
good pubs and eating establishments. Although the village is small,
it offers the holiday maker excellent camping facilities, B&B,
small hotels and plenty of self-catering accommodation.
Hawkshead is
very near the popular tourist attractions known as Tarn Hows and
Grizedale Forrest.
