Penrith
Penrith situated on the eastern borders of the Lake District, predominately
a stone built market town, which is sadly spoilt by traffic during
the week but an ideal visitor centre during the holiday seasons
and weekends.
One of the best
attractions of Penrith is the view from Penrith Beacon, which stands
overlooking the town. The view is towards the west to the Lakeland
Fells and the Keswick mountains beyond.
Most of the
interesting buildings dating from the 1700s can be found around
the local church.
Wordsworth actually
went to school in Penrith and later wrote about the town’s
famous Beacon, which used to be a portion of the communication chain
which ran the length of England and was used as an early warning
system for invasion from the Scottish.
Penrith is an
ideal base for a Lake District or Eden Valley holiday and it keeps
improving. Penrith Castle, although in ruins, is open to the public
and lies in the public car park.
Rheged is another
well worth a visitor tourist attraction offering the visitor some
unique Cumbrian gifts.
