Windermere
Originally called Birthwaite, Windemere became known after the arrival
of the railway in 1848. Some people feared that hoards of people
would soon be arriving and ruining the tranquility of the Lake District.
Fortunately
this has not happened and the railway is an ideal way to arrive
in the Lake District if public transport is to be used.
Windermere boasts
many high class homes and private yacht basins. Many of the Victorian
mansions were adopted by the National Park’s Authority and
have now been made into visitor centers or museums; Brockhole is
a good example of this.
Windermere provides
the tourist with a selection of restaurants, pubs, accommodation,
banks, outdoor clothing and visitor souvenirs.
As usual, in any Lakeland
village, there are plenty of outdoor activities on offer from Windermere including
Orrest Head, a gentle stroll to a famous view point overlooking Lake Windermere
and the village itself.
